Nami’s background
Character Background:lol backstory?
I decide what the tide will bring.
Nami the Tidecaller, champion of the Marai.
Cut off from the rest of the world, the Marai had lived centuries with stories and legends: the wonderous lands of the surface world, the darkness that lay even farther in the depths, and the Tidecaller that kept the darkness at bay. Every one hundred years, the Tidecaller would make an exchange with a land tribe: an abyssal pearl for a moonstone. The light from the moonstone would then ward off the terrors of the depths. These stories had led to complacency among the Marai, so much that when the time came to make a new exchange, they simply waited for the Tidecaller to magically appear, retrieve a pearl, and perform the ceremony. Nami, with her eyes open, was the only one who chose not to sit idle and went on the quest herself. Though many doubted her abilities, brave and true, Nami fought horrors of the deep and managed to return with the abyssal pearl.
Returning with her prize, her people were shocked to see she was successful, and in turn believed she was the new Tidecaller. While the Marai regarded her as a hero, Nami held no such visage of grandeur, as her quest was one to save her people. As the time grew near, Nami left for an old cove where the exchange would be made. However, when she arrived, the cove was empty. For days she waited, becoming more and more concerned. In all their legends, not once had the land dweller who held the moonstone not shown up. Finally, unable to wait in idle any longer, Nami summoned up a tide to bring her to shore and began her search for the moonstone, becoming the first Marai to ever explore the surface.
She is determined to save her people, as it was that determination that led her to face the trials that granted her the title as well as it led her to leaving her world behind to find the surface dweller that bore the moonstone, which in turn led her to join the League of Legends.
So aside from the great Champion of the Marai that should be held in awe, Nami is actually pretty friendly and casual. To those not facing the other end of her staff that is. While the weight of her task does weigh quite a bit, it’s not all doom and gloom. She smiles, laughs, even cracks fish puns like they were normal speech. She’s a gentle soul that’s a loyal teammate who will do all she can to ensure a victory, unafraid to complete a task by herself if it’s needed. As a Support, Nami focuses on healing more than hurting. That said, you probably shouldn’t back her against the wall. And you should run.
Of course she is curious about the surface world. After all, she’d only ever heard stories about it all her life, it’s hard not to be at least a little excited. But to actually uproot and explore it for herself has left the Tidecaller more befuddled than enchanted. It’s all the little things that get to her: the way feet look, people’s need to breathe air, and all the dry land. As far as the eye can see dry land. It’s not exactly a problem of survival, her magic and her water keep her alive and mobile on the surface, but for a girl who is used to seeing only the sea, it’s incredibly jarring.
Abilities/Special Powers:
As a Marai, Nami has natural power over water. Think of it like water-bending, as she can control currents, use water for healing, defense, or offense. It’s how she can move across dry land even though she has no legs to stand on.
Being a support, she’s much more adept at the healing and defense part.

Third-Person Sample:
What was people’s problem with rain anyway?
Really? The sky darkens, some drops fall down one by one, and the people go running for the nearest dark and decrepit old shack. That or they take out a multicolored cloth thing called an ‘umbrella.’ Either way, lots of busy hustling that left the one mermaid that wasn’t hustling dumbfounded and subject to many bumps and pushes. The very last bump may have elicited a certain death look from her, and after the people were very careful not to bump her any more.
So the street emptied fast, leaving Nami alone in the pouring rain. And honestly, she couldn’t be happier. Sure, it wasn’t saltwater, but it was still nice cold water trickling down her scales. Rainwater was much better than the same old dryness. Swishing her tail, Nami let out a giggle as she stretched out her arms. Now she could actually enjoy her afternoon out.
First-Person Sample:
[The video comes on to a shocked look of a less than normal human-looking woman. Okay, wasn’t expecting it to come alive like that. Curiosity gets the better of her, as she begins to carefully look over the strange book. In the meantime, you might notice something important. Like a tail. And the fact she has no legs. And the fact she’s a mermaid.]
Some kind of magic then? [Well, it’s as good of explanation as any.Because what’s technology? One mystery solved, but that doesn’t help with this other mystery.]
This isn’t still the League, is it? It’s hard to tell, dry land begins to blend together after awhile. [And a sigh of defeat.] No matter where I go, there’s always more of it. [Come on, not the time to get down. We still have a mission.] I guess it’s not so bad. At least I can actually smell the ocean from here. And, new dry land means there’s a new place I can search. Perhaps I can complete my quest after all.
